Architecture of destruction

Architecture historian/theorist David Gissen says the architectural legacy of the past decade is one of destruction and “vapid starchitecture.” Beginning with the destruction of the World Trade Center and followed by tragedy in New Orleans, Gaza, Lebanon, Iraq, and now Haiti, the world demands more of architecture than the fluffy signature stuff the aughties have produced.

“Lurking somewhere in our discipline are those that can make us think about these spaces and events without resorting to simple technological and representational schemes,” Gissen hopes.
