A More Perfect Dis-Union

The biggest issue I have with the conflict between Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and the teacher’s union is a bewilderment anyone in the public sector should have a union in the first place. Their salaries are paid for by taxpayers. Therefore, taxpayers are paying for these unions to extort more money from themselves. Talk about self-defeating. Why the heck would any private, taxpaying citizen support these protests? Are Wisconsin taxpayers so satisfied with the public school education their kids are getting, they want to fork over as much money as can possibly be squeezed out of them by teachers? One would think not.

I also marvel at the power these public sector unions have over the Democratic party. There is no counterpart for the republicans. As much as detractors would like to believe the GOP is under the control of the religious right, the NRA, Wall Street, defense contractors, or whatever other usual suspect paranoid progressives care to name, the fact is republicans have never and will never skip out en masses from a legislative session to avoid crossing any of thiet alleged puppet masters, even as a last resort. For Democrats, when it comes to public sector unions, running away is their first course of action.

Citizens take note--there is a a double whammy being suffered here. Public sector unions are using money we give them to force more money out of us in spite of the damage it may cause to other public services without any guarantee of any increase in quality of their provided service to justify the increased spending. Duly elected Democrats, fearful of their power to extort this money without any increased results, ignore the will of the people who elected them in order to protect the public unions’ continued racket.

The bottom line is that Wisconsinites are paying public unions more and more to get less and less other than screwed over at the same time they are paying Democrat legislators to run off and not do their jobs. Wisconsin is only the place where this circumstance is currently in the news. It is happening everywhere. A light just has not been shined on every case yet.

Wisconsin Protests Speak Volumes About Democrats

The only valuable conclusion I can draw from the educational union protest in Wisconsin is it serves as further proof the loathing progressives have for the will of the people. They believe themselves better than the unwashed masses--that would be you and me, folks--and will take all measures to defy ourt will when it goes against their agenda.

The elected Democrats in the legislature are the worst. It is an utter dereliction of duty to flee the legislature rather than face the opposition. These bozos were elected to do their jobs, not run away from them. If I were a Wisconsin Democrat, I would be upset my team has fled rather than act professionally. But that does not seem to be the case here. Progressivism has become a by any means necessary game.

A delusional one, as well. I have seen dozens of Egyptian flags among the protestors and seen several interviews in which union members have expressed the romantic idea they are for the same cause. Really? Casting aside Egypt underwent a military coup celebrated by useful idiots around the world and is likely to be ruled by the fundamentalist, aniti-Zionist, terrorist organization the Muslim Brotherhood, how is Gov. Scott Walker anything like former pres. Hosni Mubarak?

Mubarak was a president for life who routinely, brutally violated the basic human rights of anyone who opposed him in any way. Walker is the freely elected governor of Wisconsin who won based on his plans to bring sanity to the state government budget. You can read his proposal here, the heart of the matter is ending overly expensive collective bargaining for public sector unions with the exception of law enforcement and firefighters.

it pays to note that 859 of the education union workers protesting earn a combined $97.9million in salary and benefits for an average of $114,000 each. (Source) These educators are not exactly toiling in sweatshops for peanuts. Can they fairly compare themsdelves to the beat down people of Egypt who have been a stranger to freedom for 5,000 years? No, but they can assume the role of Mubarak and demand "rights" in opposition to democratly elected officials like walker.

It is not just the people of Wisconsin who feel public sector unions have too much power. a full 64% polled are in opposition, including, to their credit, 42% of Democrats. public sector unions are a hard sell.

Presumably, that is why the Wisconsin unions are engaged in such strong arm tactics. it is rather sad they feel the need to demonize the people by comparing their plight to those of the Egyptians. Sadder still elected democrats in the lrgislature are cooperating in contempt of their constituents.

Public sector unions: they are unionized against you.

Who is Jon Huntsman and Why is He Running for President?

I ask the question in all honesty. A reporter asked former Barack Obama adviser David Plouffe who he anticipated would be the toughest Republican opponent to face in 2012. He named then governor of Utah Jon Huntsman. Even the most politically astute observers responded, “Who? What?” Huntsman was shortly thereafter appointed ambassador to china by Obama, presumably to get a major potential opponent for 2012 out of the way.

Huntsman’s appointment as Ambassador to china does make some sense. He speaks fluent Mandarin because he spent time in Taiwan as a Mormon missionary after college. One wonders how the Chinese feel about a representative who has spent time in Taiwan, but that apparently has not caused any tension. What is puzzling is the assumption Huntsman is such strong presidential material. He obviously believes it himself. He will resign effective April in order to lay groundwork for a 2012 bid.

Huntsman was not a particular shining star in Utah.. He deliberately separated himself from the conservative wing of the Republican party and especially the tea Party on a number of key issues. He was for the stimulus and supports cap and trade. One suspects he is actually more comfortable as a centrist Democrat, but could not have gotten elected as one in Utah.

Obviously, Ploiffe was trying to puff up a weak opponent for 2012, one whom he knew must have had a wild hair to run anyway. Daddy huntsman is a billionaire, so he has the cash to blow on a long shot White House bid. Is there supposed to be some added drama that he is a former ambassador in the Obama administration? Beats me, but that angle has not really taken hold if so.

Here is the kicker--his nascent campaign is loaded with former John McCain staffers from 2008. As far as Republican circles go, I hope that is enough for everyone to dismiss him, but one wonders if the cocktail party conservatives of New York and DC find that as much of a detriment as the rest of us do. Nevertyheless, it looks like Obama’s 2012 campaign strategy is to run against McCain again if at all possible. We do not need to accommodate!

Mike Pence is Not Running for President. Say, What is for Lunch?

It is way too early to start talking seriously about 2012 at the Eye, but it is for that reason I mention that US Rep. Mike Pence declared he has no intentions of running for president at this time. The true conservative insider types are upset with the news, but I am having flashbacks to 2000 when California Gov. Gray Davis, the only politician dull enough to make Al Gore appear dynamic, scheduled a press conference to announce he would not be interested in being Gore’s running mate. My reaction botyh times: Thanks for telling me. Now who are you?

Just for the record, I will not accept offers from any Major league baseball teams who want to take me in the draft this year. So none should waste a pick on me.

Seriously, pence’s mild flirtation with running for president was a way to get the most publicity for his gubernatorial run in Indiana, the office he planned to seek all along. No one outside of his home state would have cared about his eventual announcement otherwise. He likely would not have attracted as much attention as he would like instate without the national media attention. Not only does he have everyone’s attention now, but it will make national news, ever so briefly, that former presidential contender pence announced for Indiana governor today…
